In today’s fast-paced digital world, creating a personalized and human connection with your website visitors is important. WordPress, a versatile and user-friendly platform, offers many features that make it easy to build engaging websites. One such feature is displaying a custom author image alongside your content. Although it may seem like a small detail, it can significantly impact your posts by adding a personal touch and enhancing your credibility.

Various plugins can improve WordPress functionality. However, too many plugins can negatively affect your website’s performance and maintenance. This guide will explain adding a custom author image in WordPress without relying on plugins. Doing so gives you full control over your website’s appearance and ensures a smooth user experience. We will provide a step-by-step process to follow.

Why a Custom Author Image Matters?

Understanding the importance of having a custom author image before getting into the technical details is important. Information is abundant in today’s digital world, and it’s crucial to have a recognizable identity. A personalized author image helps build trust and authenticity with readers, making it easier for them to connect with the content personally.

In multi-author platforms or blogs, it is helpful to individualize authorship through images. This helps distinguish contributors and facilitates audience engagement by associating a face with the content. This visual cue adds a professional touch and aids in brand recognition, particularly for those using WordPress for business or professional purposes.

The Simplicity of Plugin-Free Customization

Although plugins offer many convenience and features, it is often better to follow the “less is more” approach when managing a website. Using a plugin-free method to add a custom author image in WordPress gives users more control over their site’s performance, security, and user experience.

This method eliminates relying on third-party tools that could affect your site’s loading speed or compatibility. It equips users to understand WordPress’s core functionality, resulting in a lean and efficient website.

What You’ll Learn in This Guide

This guide will provide simple steps to set up a custom author image on your WordPress website. We will take you through each step, from accessing your WordPress dashboard to implementing the chosen image on your user profile. We’ll also explain the significance of image dimensions and file formats and how to ensure optimal display across various themes. By the end of this tutorial, you’ll have all the necessary knowledge to personalize authorship and enhance the visual appeal of your WordPress website without the need for additional plugins.

Step-by-step guide to adding custom author images without a plugin

Step 1: Create an author image that is 200px X 200px. Once you have created the image, upload it to your WordPress site’s media (library) section.

After uploading an image, you should click on the uploaded image and copy its URL.

Step 2: Go to your WordPress dashboard, click Appearance, then select Theme Editor. From there, click on the functions.php file.

Step 3: Copy the code below and paste it at the bottom of the functions.php file (as shown in the image).

add_filter( 'avatar_defaults', 'wpb_new_gravatar' );
function wpb_new_gravatar ($avatar_defaults) {
$myavatar = 'your_image_url';
$avatar_defaults[$myavatar] = "Default Gravatar";
return $avatar_defaults;
}

Step 4: In the provided code, we have included a line for “your_image_url”. Please replace the copied URL with this line (check the image below) and click “Update File”.

Step 5: Go to the WordPress dashboard and click on settings > discussion (under the Default Avatar, now you can see your custom author image); refresh the page.

If you didn’t find your author image, check under Avatar Display to see if it’s checked.

Step 6: Adding a custom author image without a plugin in WordPress has been completed. To use the author’s image, select it.

Conclusion

You have now learned how to add a custom author image to your WordPress website without using a plugin. I have used the same method for over 12 years on my and my clients’ websites. If you found this step-by-step guide helpful, please share it with your friends to help them create their custom author image on their website. Thank you.
